How to Register Your LPA
After you create your Lasting Power of Attorney, it must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) before it can be used. Here is everything you need to know about the registration process.
Registration Timeline
LPA registration typically takes 8 to 12 weeks from when the OPG receives your application. This is why it is important to create your LPA well in advance of when you might need it.
Registration Steps
Complete and Sign Your LPA
First, fill out your LPA forms. The donor (you), attorneys, and certificate provider must all sign in the correct order. See our signing guide for details.
Pay the Registration Fee
The OPG charges a registration fee per LPA. You may be eligible for a reduction or exemption if you receive certain benefits or have a low income.
Send to the OPG
Post your signed LPA forms and payment to the Office of the Public Guardian. Keep copies of everything you send.
Wait for Registration
The OPG will check your LPA and contact anyone who needs to be notified. If there are no objections, your LPA will be registered and returned to you.
What Happens If My LPA Is Rejected?
The OPG may reject an LPA if there are errors in the forms or if the signing order was incorrect. Common reasons for rejection include:
- Missing signatures or dates
- Signatures in the wrong order
- Ineligible certificate provider
- Unclear or contradictory instructions
